Komida Foodhall

A brand new student restaurant opened on Campus Drie Eiken of the University of Antwerp as part of a broader campus renovation. Together with UAntwerpen and B-Bis architects, Group Jansen realized a contemporary foodhall where meeting, experience and functionality are central.
Challenge
The existing student restaurant Komida was bursting at the seams. The university was investing heavily in new teaching and research infrastructure and needed a contemporary dining and meeting place that could support the growing student population.
The challenge was to create a space for 400 students that is not only functional and low-maintenance, but also exudes warmth, identity and dynamism. Moreover, the foodhall had to integrate perfectly into a new campus plaza with sports hall and commercial functions.

Result
The new foodhall seats 400 students and combines different seating areas: long tables for group meals, smaller tables and lounge areas for informal gatherings. Natural materials such as wood and concrete provide a warm, robust feel. Neutral tones are complemented by red accents that reference the university’s identity. Large windows bring in abundant natural light, while pendant lights and spotlights create a cozy atmosphere.
Group Jansen realized a wide range of works with focus on interior, custom and technical finishing. Spray plaster on walls and ceilings optimizes acoustics. The metal spiral staircase and railings enhance the industrial character. The custom furniture, including zigzag tables, integrated planters and waste units, was designed and produced entirely in-house. Eyecatchers are the zigzag booths with acoustic panels that bring tranquility to the dynamic space. Jansen Energy Solutions provided all electrical and lighting services.
The result is much more than a dining spot: it is a vibrant meeting place that forms the new campus heart.
