Merelbeke
At the 32-hectare KARUS campus in Merelbeke-Melle, Jansen Smart Solutions implemented a digital energy transformation. A smart heating network and central management system were rolled out, enabling the healthcare institution to drastically reduce its energy consumption and future-proof its management.
Challenge
The biggest challenge lay in integrating 24 buildings spread across multiple campuses, each with its own technical installations and boiler rooms. KARUS not only wanted to save energy but also to simplify management and standardize monitoring. Without extensive renovations, a solution was needed that was scalable, reliable, and sustainable. The rollout of a local heating network and the implementation of a central BMS formed the core of this transformation, carried out by Jansen Smart Solutions.
Result
Energy savings of up to 33%
The impact of this BMS is remarkable. In some buildings, such as PVT De Wadi, energy consumption decreased by 22% in just one year. This was achieved without major structural changes to the installations or building envelope, purely through smart control and visualization. Across all buildings, gas consumption has even decreased by 33% since 2021, from 8,400 MWh to 5,900 MWh.
A uniform system is implemented not only on the Merelbeke-Melle campus but also in Ghent. This ensures consistent monitoring and simpler management. Key functions such as urgent alarms, DECT integration, and consumption measurement for water, gas, and electricity are configured uniformly across all locations. This increases efficiency and simplifies future expansions.
The combination of a modern BMS, a smartly controlled heating network, and advanced monitoring tools prepares the KARUS campuses for the future. Thanks to Jansen Smart Solutions, it optimizes its energy management, reduces costs, and achieves more efficient and sustainable buildings. In the future, work will also be done on implementing an Energy Management System (EMS).
