In Leiden, the heart of the biotech valley of the Netherlands, the brand-new complex of Batavia Biosciences has recently shone. Jansen Cleanrooms & Labs was responsible for the realization of the cleanrooms and laboratories. An impressive project where expertise and teamwork were central.

Complete Installation & Setup
The new building of Batavia Biosciences is an impressive 12,000 m2 and has 6 floors. It includes laboratories, cleanrooms, and offices for vaccine production. “On behalf of VILS, we at Jansen Cleanrooms & Labs were responsible for the complete installation and setup. From HVAC, electricity, automation to furniture by Vinitex,” project leader Sulémaan Roose enthusiastically explains.
“It is truly an impressive project. Not only the floors with the cleanrooms and labs—which have more than 100 doors per floor!—but certainly also the intermediate floors that are fully equipped for the techniques. Only then do you see what is needed to keep these high-tech spaces running.”
Flawless Delivery
The project started in March 2024 and was delivered in May 2025. “Without any outstanding delivery points,” emphasizes Sulémaan. “That is entirely thanks to the team. From the BIM plans to the site managers: everyone gave 110%, took responsibility, and always remained solution-oriented. Besides the flawless delivery, we also passed all validation tests on the first try. That is truly rare. They were quite amazed by that.”
During the week, the team from Jansen Cleanrooms & Labs stayed at a hotel. “The Van Der Valk hotel became a bit of our second home. That had advantages: we really created a close bond and could discuss some matters during dinner, for example. Truly a top team and we will definitely miss it,” laughs Sulémaan.

Challenging Sustainability
A project of this scale naturally has challenges. Sulémaan still sighs when talking about the placement of the air units: “These had to be placed on steel structures in the building. Due to circumstances, this was not possible, and we had to come up with an alternative. Meanwhile, the air units were in the way of further work. Fortunately, together with our partners, we found a solution.”
In terms of sustainability, Batavia is reaching great heights. “To save energy, we implemented night regimes while maintaining strict requirements for air pressure and hygiene. This approach results in a significant reduction in energy consumption,” Sulémaan clarifies.
Ready for the Future
Batavia Biosciences is fully settled in and looks back on the collaboration with satisfaction. For Jansen Cleanrooms & Labs, this is not only a beautiful realization but a showcase that highlights craftsmanship and expertise. “When you walk around, you don’t know where to look. The finish is so good, the cleanrooms and techniques so impressive, … the whole team can proudly look back on a successful project where we together pushed boundaries,” concludes Sulémaan Roose.
